Bigleaf Maple

Acer macrophyllum • Oregon maple


The largest maple in Canada; can grow to be up to 36 meters. It often develops a narrow crown when grown in dense forests, and a broad crown when grown in open sites. Bigleaf maple generally grows in coarse, moist soils and can be found near rivers, lakes or stream edges. It is restricted to the southwest corner of British Columbia at low to mid elevations.


Very large, 15-30 cm wide; upper surface shiny dark green, paler and hairless beneath. Large lobes and deep sinuses present.


Grayish-brown, shallowly furrowed into narrowscaly ridges


Small, 10 mm across, greenish-yellow


Wings 30-40 mm long, slightly divergent
