Cornus alternifolia


Popular small tree used as ornamental in gardens. Berries not edible by humans, but popular for birds. Found in rich soil of open woodlands and slopes near water.


Clustered at branch tips. Green leaves are hairless above, and slightly hairy underneath. Veins run parallel on leaves towards tip, with 4-5 veins per leaf.


Dark blue to black, small berries. Fruit on short red stalks.


Young bark greenish to reddish brown and smooth. Mature bark has shallow ridges.


White or cream-coloured clusters. Flower in June.
