American Plum

Prunus americana • Wild plum or red plum


Small tree or large shrub, typically grows up to 5 meters tall. It is native to North America and is widespread throughout Canada. It is a fast-growing tree but short lived. American plum is helpful for stabilizing stream-banks because of its dense root system and  is found in rocky or sandy soils in moist forests and along streams. Despite the edible fruits, other parts of the tree including leaves and Plum stones, contain the toxic hydrocyanic acid and should not be digested. known for it’s fragrant flowers.



Leaves dark green above. Edged with fine, sharp teeth. Stalks often have 2 glands near the base.


Yellow to red plums with yellow flesh. In singles or 2-4 together.


Young bark smooth with lenticels (pores). Mature bark reddish-brown with grey-brown plates.


White flowers, saucer-shaped with 5 petals. Flowers in clusters of 2-4. Flowers in late April to early June.
