Dotted Hawthorn

Dotted hawthorn is a small tree typically reaching up to 8 meters tall, it is one of the most easily recognized hawthorns. It is native to eastern Canada and the eastern United States. Dotted hawthorn is often planted as an ornamental because of its showy flowers, but can become a nuisance and hazardous with its thorns. It can be found around farmland, along streams and in forest openings, especially on soils rich in calcium.


Deciduous, simple and alternate. Leaves are dull green, paler underneath, and slightly hairy. Leaves always longer than wide.


Red to orange red in colour. Fruit are pear shaped. Pale-dotted fruit.


Twigs have thorns (2-8 cm long). Buds are rounded and often grouped in 2-3, with one becoming a thorn.


Mature bark is brownish-grey. Fissured (split/cracked).
