Rock Elm

Rock elm is a rare deciduous tree native to North America, it can grow anywhere between 15-30 meters tall. This species is the hardest, heaviest, strongest, and toughest among the elms. Rock elm need full sunlight to grow and can be found in varied habitats from rock outcrops to open fields. Its preferred habitat is moist but well-drained sandy loam, loam, or silt loam soil, mixed with other hardwoods. Rock elm is vulnerable to Dutch elm disease.


Leaves thick, shiny dark above and somewhat hairy underneath. Pointed and with asymmetrical bases. Sharp-toothed edges.


Bark is shaggy with alternating corky layers of pale scales and thicker, dark scales.
