Slippery Elm

Ulmus rubra


Slippery elm is a species of elm native to North America. It is a medium sized deciduous tree, commonly growing 12-20 meters tall. It has a really distinct spreading crown of branches. Slippery elm commonly grows in dry, intermediate soils, it is somewhat vulnerable to Dutch elm disease however trees can live up to 200 years old.


Leaves are dark green and very rough above, hairy underneath. Narrow appex, with medium serrations and asymmetrical base. Fragrant.


Dry, flat, green winged nutlets (samaras). Hang in tight clusters.


Bark reddish-brown with irregular ridges of brown, corky layers. Inner bark fragrant and slimy.
