Oneseed Hawthorn

Crataegus monogyna • Common hawthorn, single-seeded hawthorn


Oneseed hawthorn is a tall shrub native to Europe, northwest Africa and western Asia. It typically grows between 8-10 meters tall and is a common species in Great Britain. Oneseed hawthorn is extensively planted as a hedge plant, especially for agricultural use and is naturalized in many parts of North America. Oneseed hawthorn wood is used for carving and lathe work but also to make toothpicks, awls, pins and fish hooks. Contains many medicinal properties as well.


Alternate, simple, deciduous; blades dark green, paler beneath, firm, triangular to broady ovate; cut over halfway to the midvein into 3-7 lobes tipped with irregular sharp teeth


Mature bark dark grey to brownish, slightly scaly


Rose-coloured, unpleasant-smelling, flowers in branched, flat-topped clusters.


Bright red haws, thin-fleshed, rounded to ellipsoidal, 5-8mm wide.
