Red Maple

Acer rubrum • Scarlet Maple, Soft Maple, Curled Maple


Red maple is a medium-sized tree that can grow up to 25 meters tall, with a trunk that’s 60 centimeters in diameter. It is found in central and southern Ontario, in the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence region. It grows best in moist soil, but can tolerate different moisture levels, often found in cool, moist sites by swamps, streams and springs. The red maple is one of the first trees to flower in the spring.


Leaves are light green and whitish underneath. 3-5 lobes separated by shallow, sharp notches. Double toothed. Leaves bright red in fall.


Young bark light grey and smooth. Mature bark greyish-brown, scaly and with thin plates that peel from both ends.


Red, reddish-brown or yellow pairs of winged keys (samaras). Wings spreading at 60 degrees. Hang in clusters.


Reddish, short-stalked. Male and female flowers on separate branches on same tree. Flowers in clusters. Flowers in late winter.
