Austrian Pine

Pinus nigra • Black pine

Austrian pine is a variable species of pine native to Europe and introduced to North America. It can grow anywhere between 20-50 meters tall.  It is found in areas where it has been planted  such as parks and private land. It is fast growing and tolerant of urban conditions, often planted as a visual or wind break. It needs full sun to grow well, is intolerant of shade, and is resistant to snow and ice damage.  It usually has a rounded conic form, that becomes irregular with age. The tree can be long-lived, with some trees over 500 years old.

Bundles of 2 or 3 needles that are straight. Don't break when bent. Dark green.

Seed cones brown and woody when mature, clustered in groups of 1 to 4. 5-10 cm long, rounded scales on cones.

Bark is dark brown and grey and deeply layered, flaky.
