Sugar Maple

Acer saccharum • Hard Maple, Curly Maple


The sugar maple is a large tree that can grow up to 35 meters tall and can live for more than 200 years. It is native to North America and can be found in central and southern Ontario. Sugar maples do best in deep, rich and well-drained soil. Its roots are deep and wide spreading, and it’s a large and strong tree, ideal for use as a shade tree. Canada’s national tree and the inspiration for the Maple Leaf on the Canadian flag. Species most well known for syrup production.


Deciduous, simple, opposite. Green leaves, paler beneath and hairless. Five lobes with rounded notches. 8-20 cm long.


Green/brown winged keys (samaras). Parallel wings.


Mature bark grey and irregularly ridged.
