Large-Toothed Aspen

Populus grandidentata • Big toothed aspen

Large tooth aspen is a medium sized tree that usually grows up to 20 meters tall. It is native to North America and can be found throughout southern Ontario north to Temiskaming Shores and Sault Ste. Marie. Found in upland habitats on moist, fertile sites. Lower quality trees found on dry, poor sites. A separate population grows near the Ontario-Minnesota border. It is a valuable species for regeneration in disturbed landscapes because they hold soil in place and are fast-growing. Spread rapidly through suckering from their roots.

Leaves greyish-hairy at first then become hairless and dark green. 7-15 coarse, uneven, blunt teeth on each side of leaf.

Downy capsules that hang in catkins. Seeds tipped with tufts of silky white hairs.

Young bark smooth, olive to yellow-grey with wide diamond-shaped marks. Mature bark dark grey and furrowed.
