Eastern Flowering Dogwood

Cornus florida


Large shrub or small tree often used as an ornamental. Fruit important source of food for birds. Fast growing but short-lived tree. Found in and around wet or sandy woodlands and ravines.

Also known as great-flowered dogwood, arrow-wood, common dogwood.


Simple but usually 2-4 at branch tips. Leaves green above and greyish-green underneath. Parallel veins, and slightly wavy-edged.


Shiny, red, berry like. Stalked in dense clusters of 3-6 or more.


Mature bark dark reddish-brown, deeply checked with 4-sided scales.


Yellowish and tiny. 20-30 clusters found in the centre of 4 white or pinkish petals. Flowers in May.
